Forty years before Barack Obama, chosen last week as the Democratic Party's nominee for the U.S. presidency, there was the Rev. Channing E. Phillips. The son of a Brooklyn pastor, Phillips, a District of Columbia-based civil-rights leader and social activist, was the first African American whose name was placed in nomination for the U.S. presidency by a major political party, the Democrats. His name was put forward at their tumultuous 1968 convention in Chicago

Phillips was pastor at Washington D.C.'s Lincoln Temple – like Obama's long-time Chicago church, from which Obama estranged himself this year, a congregation of the United Church of Christ. Phillips was later a minister at Manhattan's Riverside Church

Although Obama is Christian, July 2008 polls have shown that some Americans believe incorrectly that he is Muslim or was raised Muslim (12% and 26%, respectively, in Pew and Newsweek polls). When comments from old sermons thrust the Rev. Jeremiah Wright unfavorably into the national spotlight during the Democratic primaries, the Chicago pastor maintained wide support among black churchgoers who have admired him for decades.

And few black churches have stayed more loyal than Elmwood United Presbyterian in East Orange, where Wright next Sunday will begin a weeklong church revival, titled "Recapturing Our Prophetic Voice." He has led revivals there every September since 1989…

I find it interesting Obama, a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, and McCain, a Southern Baptist, who both made very clear confessions of faith in Jesus Christ recently in a forum held at Saddleback Church, would stoop to mudslinging.

The Rev. Karen Thompson of the United Church of Christ serves as a member of the Florida VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster). She said she has had a chance to look at the overall picture of damage in the state from that position and as the associate minister for disaster recovery and response for her church's statewide organization.

"There are a lot of people in need, especially in Brevard County," she said.

The UCC, the Florida Conference of The United Methodist Church and several other organizations are working to ensure the clean up kits they need to help survivors get their homes back in order are ready to go. The Red Cross has opened (and, in some cases, closed) shelters around the state to give temporary relief to those who were put out of their homes. Most of the thousands who were displaced have gone to stay with family and friends.

… We have a vibrant lesbian and gay membership in Spring Creek United Church of Christ, and we are members of a denomination that has had a place in American religious life since before the Revolutionary War. We have a special ministry called Maranatha, established to do ministry and outreach with the gay community. Our gay members pray for the sick, visit and take meals to the homebound, sing in the choir, teach Sunday school and serve in leadership roles. Like other Christians, they wrestle over the meaning of scripture and what it means to us in 21st-century America and the world, and struggle to discern God’s plan for them as Christians. In other words, they are pretty much what Paul called “saints of the Lord,” people walking the Way of Christ as they are able. …

Within each [of]us is the seed of Divinity. Each Soul is divine. I bow to the divinity in us all!
