When comments from old sermons thrust the Rev. Jeremiah Wright unfavorably into the national spotlight during the Democratic primaries, the Chicago pastor maintained wide support among black churchgoers who have admired him for decades.

And few black churches have stayed more loyal than Elmwood United Presbyterian in East Orange, where Wright next Sunday will begin a weeklong church revival, titled "Recapturing Our Prophetic Voice." He has led revivals there every September since 1989…

They hit it off instantly, connecting on a spiritual level, said Burkins, who himself preaches one Sunday a year at Trinity United Church of Christ in...

Obama's troubles with Catholics and evangelicals can be traced to his many years of attendance at the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ, a church that professes a belief in "liberation theology." According to "talking points" listed on Trinity Church's Web site, "The vision statement of Trinity United Church of Christ is based upon the systematized liberation theology that started in 1969 with the publication of Dr. James Cone's book, Black Power and Black Theology."

Poll on race stresses need for ‘sacred conversations’

Poll on race stresses need for ‘sacred conversations’

A recent New York Times/CBS News poll revealing deep national divisions along racial lines is an urgent reminder of the need for “sacred conversations on race,” the head of the National Council of Churches said …

The call for sermons on race was issued earlier this year by John H. Thomas, general minister and president of the United Church of Christ, and promptly endorsed by Kinnamon and other church leaders. Thomas made the call as church leaders gathered on the steps of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ and defended Jeremiah Wright, then the target of a storm of criticism for remarks deemed unpatriotic and radical by critics.

They know this is cannon-fodder for the Neo-Con element of the White Supremacy Dynamic, who are already linking Obama’s statement to Rev. Wright's 2007 speech before N'COBRA, “A Call for Justice and Repair;” to Trinity Chuch member Dr. Iva Carruthers’ “The Church and Reparations―An African American Perspective,” which was distributed by her denomination at the 2001 U.N. World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, and to a 2001 resolution presented by Trinity UCC and University Church to the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ:

This resolution calls upon the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ, its Associations, its local churches, and other related agencies, to be educated about the historical evils of the slave trade and its legacy which is a pernicious and self perpetuating distrust and fear that continues to feed the sin of racism and its fruits of inequality and injustice. It further calls upon the Conference to take actions in support of reparations.

On my last day in Chicago as a UNITY Journalists of Color delegate, I had a choice: Go see U.S. Sen. Barack Obama address the closing ceremony of the conference or accept an invitation to visit his former church, Trinity United Church of Christ. Yes, the Trinity UCC that made headlines last spring because of past comments made by its retired pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Obama’s extensive connections with Islam and radical politics, from his father’s and stepfather’s Islamic backgrounds, to his Communist and socialist mentors in Hawaii and Chicago, to his long-term and close associations with former Weather Underground heroes William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn—associations much closer than heretofore revealed by the press Barack and wife Michelle’s twenty-year-long religious affiliation with the black-liberation theology of former Trinity United Church of Christ Reverend Jeremiah Wright, whose sermons have always been steeped in a rage first expressed by Frantz Fanon, Stokely Carmichael, and Malcolm X, a rage that Corsi shows has deep meaning for Obama.

Barack Obama’s resignation from Trinity United Church of Christ over, in part, “a cultural and a stylistic gap” raises additional doubts about him. The obvious question is what “cultural and stylistic gap” exists now that hasn’t existed during the last two decades, when Obama was a member of Trinity United and an intimate friend with its pastor, Jeremiah Wright Jr.? The answer, of course, is none. Trinity United and Jeremiah Wright are what they have always been; it is Obama — or more precisely, Obama’s political interests — that have changed.

Pastor inspires `audacity to hope'

Pastor inspires `audacity to hope'

Chicago Tribune (January 21, 2007)

“When he took over Trinity United Church of Christ in 1972, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. was a maverick pastor with a wardrobe of dashikis and a militant message. Six years later, he planted a "Free South Africa" sign on the lawn of his church and asked other local religious leaders to follow his lead. None took him up on the invitation.. The sign stayed until the end of apartheid, long enough to catch the eye of a young Barack Obama, who visited the church in 1985 as a community activist. Obama, not a churchgoer at the time, found himself returning to the sanctuary of Trinity United. In Wright he found both a spiritual mentor and a role model.”
